Bantam Red-Shouldered Yokohama

(rotgesattelte Jokohama)

Red-Shouldered Yokohama Page One / Page Two / Bantam Red-Shouldered Yokohama / White Yokohama / Blue Red-Shouldered Yokohama / Breeding

From the breeding programme of Hanjoerg Haltiner.

The lines of Bantam Yokohamas present in Europe today were all "dwarfed" by using already "dwarfed" gamefowl with hard feathers. The results have had one negative aspect: in gamefowl with already short and hard feathers, the older the cocks become, oftetimes the shorter the tail feathers become. It is now apparent in many dwarf Yoko lines that the roosters, instead of growing each year slightly longer tails as in most longtail breeds, they shorten with age. This is a problem that internationally acclaimed breeder Hansjoerg Haltiner has been working on for years. The birds are usually of extreme figure refinement and beautifully spangled, but the feather length is present only in one and a half year old roosters.

This little rooster shown above left was a jewel on the farm where we lived in Switzerland! He was directly descendant of birds improted from then iron-curtained East Germany. A couple of breeders were allowed to make a once in a lifetime visit allowed by the communist government and they were very kind to bring us some eggs from their far more developed stocks. These birds now dominate the genetic pool of red-shouldered Yokohama bantams in Germany, Switzerland and Holland.
